Itinerary
Day 1: Tozeur – Gateway to the Sahara – The Red Desert
It all begins in Tozeur, southwestern Tunisia, where Adel, your local Berber guide, and Christel will welcome you. After a short transfer to the town centre, we’ll explore the historic 14th-century medina of Ouled El Hwadef and if time allows, we’ll taste the famous mint tea before continuing to our first camp. We’ll drive across the spectacular Chott-El Jerid, the Sahara’s largest salt pan stretching an impressive 250 km!
In the evening, you’ll arrive at the Timbaine desert camp. Here, your Berber team will welcome you with a traditional dinner around the campfire. You will be able to choose between sleeping in a comfortable tent or under the vast, starry Saharan sky.
Days 2-6: Desert Wellness and Discovery
Mornings will begin with a gentle sunrise yoga and meditation session, allowing you to connect with the serene desert landscape. As dawn breaks, you’ll practice breathwork and mindfulness, preparing your body and spirit for the day’s adventures.
During the day, you will cover 4-6 hours of leisurely walking, traversing the mesmerizing Red and White Deserts. You’ll discover hidden oases, ancient wells, and engage in fascinating archaeological activities like searching for Neolithic stone arrowheads dating back 10,000-2,000 BC. The landscape varies dramatically – from fine red sands with unique cuvette formations to white dunes dotted with delicate “roses des sables”.
Cultural immersion is a key component of the journey. You will have the opportunity to learn traditional skills like baking desert “galette” bread, assisting with gathering firewood and helping to care for the camp’s camels. These authentic experiences provide deep insights into Berber desert life.
As the day winds down, sunset yoga and meditation sessions will help you unwind, releasing the day’s tensions while witnessing breathtaking desert twilights. The evening campfire dinners will provide a space for stargazing and sharing stories with the other travellers.
Day 7: Cultural Immersion
After bidding farewell to the White Desert, you’ll transfer to Douz for a well-deserved shower. The afternoon offers opportunities to explore local shops and purchase unique souvenirs and aromatic spices. The day’s highlight is a special traditional Berber meal prepared by Adel’s sisters in their family home – a truly authentic culinary experience to connect with local culture.
Day 8: Fond Farewells
On our final morning, after breakfast (in Douz or Tozeur depending on your flight), it’s time to say our goodbyes to our Berber friends. The memories of this unique adventure will remain with you long after you return home. Until we meet again, inshallah!
