Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Djerba – First Taste of Tunisia

We arrive on the island of Djerba, where the Mediterranean meets North Africa and the air already feels different. At the airport, you are welcomed by Christel from North View Adventure and Adel, our Tunisian guide — the first of many familiar faces you’ll get to know over the week.

After a short transfer to the hotel and time to freshen up, we head out for our first traditional Tunisian meal. Couscous, tagine, grilled fish — there are no wrong choices here. Then, it’s a relaxed afternoon and evening, a chance to meet fellow travellers, ease into Tunisian hospitality, and quietly adjust to the idea that this week won’t be rushed.

We return to the hotel for a proper night’s sleep. Tomorrow, the desert awaits.

Day 2: Djerba to Jebil National Park – Entering the White Desert

After breakfast, we leave Djerba and head southwest. The landscape slowly opens up, the roads stretch out, and the landscape becomes wider and quieter.

We stop along the way for a traditional lunch before continuing towards Jebil National Park. By late afternoon, we arrive at our first desert camp, where our Berber hosts welcome us with traditional mint tea. Sweet, strong, and symbolic of the generosity that defines desert life.

As the sun lowers, dinner is prepared and shared around the campfire. This is your first night in the Sahara, and you can choose to sleep in a comfortable tent or directly under the vast, star-filled sky. Both options come highly recommended.

Day 3-6: Embracing the Desert’s Rhythm

For the next four days, we’ll let the desert set our pace. We’ll walk for about 4-6 hours each day on the soft white sand of the Grand Erg Oriental. It’s not a race – we’ll take time to breathe, to absorb the landscape around us. We’ll be treasure-hunting, looking for delicate “roses des sables”, nature’s desert sculptures. And if you are lucky, you might spot a stone arrowhead, a tiny piece of human history from thousands of years ago. We’ll pass by natural wells and little oases. As we walk, you’ll feel the stress of everyday life melt away, replaced by a deep sense of peace that only wide-open spaces can offer.

At night, you will be able to choose to either sleep in a tent or directly under the stars. There’s something incredibly grounding about falling asleep directly under the Milky Way. If you are curious, join in with camp life. Try your hand at making bread in the embers, or help gather wood for the fire. Our gentle camels will be with us too to keep us company and eagerly accept cereals and leftovers.

Day 7: From the Berber Hospitality in the Desert to Matmata – Life Carved in Stone

After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to our Berber hosts. Farewells are often warmer — and more emotional — than expected. Days spent walking, cooking, and sharing stories in the desert create connections that linger long after the sand has settled.

We travel north toward Matmata, a village famous for its troglodyte houses carved directly into the earth. Stepping inside one of these ancient dwellings feels like stepping back in time. We share a traditional Berber lunch in this extraordinary setting, surrounded by walls that have sheltered generations and a landscape that speaks of resilience and ingenuity.

In the afternoon, we continue to Djerba. There’s time to explore Houmt Souk at your own pace, wandering through winding streets and colourful markets, picking up souvenirs that have stories attached to them — tangible memories of a week immersed in desert life.

Day 8: Fond Farewells

After breakfast, it’s time to pack up and head to the airport. There are goodbyes to say, contact details to exchange, and a few last shared smiles over the week’s memories.

You leave with more than just photos. There’s a quiet sense of having experienced something different, a better understanding of desert life, and a few new friendships formed along the way. The week in the Sahara offers a perspective that stays with you long after you return home — simple, memorable, and unexpectedly grounding.
