From searching for ancient stone arrowheads to witnessing breathtaking desert sunsets, sleeping under a starry sky to sharing meals with local families, this adventure promises a meaningful experience surrounded by special landscapes. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or a seeker of authentic experiences, this journey will redefine your understanding of wilderness, community, and personal discovery.

Itinerary

Day 1: Stepping Into Another World

We will meet at Tozeur airport, the gateway to our desert adventure. After a quick transfer to the town centre, we’ll dive into the old Medina’s winding alleys. If time allows, we’ll visit the souk before heading to our desert camp. As we cross the vast Chott-El-Jerid, the Sahara’s largest salt pan, you’ll feel the modern world slipping away. Our first night in the desert will offer a simple meal under a breathtaking starry sky.

Day 2-6: Embracing the Desert’s Rhythm

For the next five days, we’ll let the desert set our pace. We’ll walk for about 4-6 hours each day on the soft white sand of the Grand Erg Oriental. It’s not a race – we’ll take time to breathe, to absorb the landscape around us. We’ll be treasure-hunting, looking for delicate “roses des sables”, nature’s desert sculptures. And if you are lucky, you might spot a stone arrowhead, a tiny piece of human history from thousands of years ago. We’ll pass by natural wells and little oases. As we walk, you’ll feel the stress of everyday life melt away, replaced by a deep sense of peace that only wide-open spaces can offer.

At night, you will be able to choose to either sleep in a tent or directly under the stars. There’s something incredibly grounding about falling asleep directly under the Milky Way. If you are curious, join in with camp life. Try your hand at making bread in the embers, or help gather wood for the fire. Our gentle camels will be with us too to keep us company and eagerly accept cereals and leftovers.

Day 7: From Solitude to Berber Hospitality

We’ll say goodbye to the white sands and head back to our B&B in Douz. After a well-earned shower, we’ll spend a few hours in the afternoon exploring local shops and having a mint tea in the main square.

In the evening, we’ll experience Berber hospitality by sharing a traditional Berber meal lovingly prepared by Adel’s sisters in their family home.

Day 8: Fond Farewells

On our final morning, after breakfast (in Douz or Tozeur depending on your flight), it’s time to say our goodbyes to our Berber friends. The memories of this unique adventure will remain with you long after you return home. Until we meet again, inshallah!

In Paris

You might need to have a night in Paris if your flight leaves early. This overnight stay is NOT included in the price of your walking holiday and you need to book directly with the hotel. There are plenty of choices in Paris and Orly. We will provide some suggestions.

In Tunisia

The accommodation is arranged by our local guide and it includes a night in shared basic accommodation in a Berber B&B in Douz at the end of our trek. It also includes 6 nights in a tent.
Our guide and his team belong to the last generation of Berbers born and bred in the desert. They call it home and know it like the back of their hands. They have been working together for over 20 years. They have a joie de vivre second to none and love sharing their knowledge, their traditions and passion for the Sahara.

Flights

You need to book your flight to Tozeur. For those living in the UK, there are no direct flights. The options are to either fly to Tunis or Paris and take a connecting flight. We suggest you go via Paris and take a connecting Transavia flight to Tozeur. They have two departures per week from Paris Orly 3 on Tuesdays and Fridays. For this reason, we strongly suggest to book your flight early to avoid disappointments. We will share the flights details once the timetable is released. If the flight leaves early morning from Paris, you will need to book an overnight accommodation in Paris or Orly.
