This women-only trek through Tunisia’s southwestern desert is an invitation to slow down, walk together, and experience the Sahara through shared moments and everyday desert life. Like our other desert journeys, it’s shaped around walking, cultural exchange, and living simply — with the added richness that comes from travelling in a supportive, women-only group.

This is not about testing limits or chasing distance. It’s about moving at a steady pace, learning from Berber guides who call the desert home, and discovering how quickly unfamiliar places can begin to feel comfortable when experienced together.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Djerba – Settling In

We arrive on the Mediterranean island of Djerba, where you are welcomed by Christel and Adel. After a short transfer to the hotel and time to freshen up, we head out to explore Houmt Souk and the medina. Wandering through the streets, we take time to notice the architecture, the colours, and the rhythms of daily life.

A visit to the market offers a chance to observe local craftspeople and merchants before we share a traditional Tunisian dinner together. The evening is relaxed — a chance to get to know one another and ease into the journey ahead. We spend the night in a hotel in Djerba.

Day 2: Matmata, Film History & First Night in the Desert

After breakfast, we travel south to Matmata, a Berber town known for its underground troglodyte homes. Many families here still live beneath the earth, a practical response to desert conditions. We visit one of these homes and enjoy lunch in this unique setting.

Matmata is also known as a filming location for Star Wars, and we stop to see one of the iconic sites — a moment that blends popular culture with the reality of desert life.

In the afternoon, we cross an arid, hilly landscape where Berber communities grow almonds and olives before reaching Douz. From here, 4×4 vehicles take us into the desert to our first camp. We are welcomed by our Berber team and share dinner around the campfire. You can choose to sleep in a tent or under the open, star-filled sky.

Days 3-6: Walking in the the Sahara – Life at Desert Pace

These days form the heart of the journey. Walking four to five hours each day at a steady, comfortable pace, we cross the vast dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental — a landscape that feels expansive, quiet, and deeply grounding.

Walking is just one part of the experience. Life in camp unfolds naturally around shared tasks and moments: helping prepare meals, baking galette bread in embers and sand, gathering firewood from desert shrubs, and spending time with the camels that accompany us. These are everyday aspects of desert life, and you’re invited to take part at your own pace.

Our guide helps us read the land as we walk, pointing out sand roses shaped by wind and time, and Neolithic artefacts dating back between 10,000 and 2,000 BC. These discoveries offer quiet reminders that people have lived, travelled, and adapted here for thousands of years.

Accommodation alternates between comfortable tents and sleeping under the open sky, giving you the freedom to choose what feels right each night. Evenings are unhurried — shared meals, conversation, and stargazing under vast desert skies.

Travelling in a women-only group creates a relaxed and supportive atmosphere, where conversations flow easily and shared experiences quickly build connection.

Day 7: Final walk & Return to Douz

After breakfast, we complete the final couple of hours of walking before enjoying our last lunch in the desert. It’s a gentle, reflective end to the trekking days.

In the afternoon, 4×4 vehicles take us back to Douz, where a shower feels particularly welcome. There’s time to explore local shops, browse spices or crafts, or simply enjoy being back in town. We come together again in the evening for dinner.

Day 8: Farewell – Taking the Experience Home

On our final morning, we travel from Douz back to Djerba for our return flights. There are goodbyes, contact details exchanged, and a shared sense of having experienced something meaningful together

A Note for First-Time Trekkers

This trek is designed for people with a moderate level of fitness who are comfortable walking several hours a day at a steady, unpressured pace. You do not need prior trekking experience. What matters most is curiosity, openness, and a willingness to share daily life in the desert.

The itinerary may adapt slightly depending on weather, group energy levels, or logistics — this flexibility is part of desert travel and ensures the experience remains safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for everyone.
